Images ---> Photojournalism ---> Multimedia
As more and more consumers of news products look to the internet for up-to-the-minute headlines, newspapers and other print media must continue to evolve in order to meet the needs of the increasingly technology-savvy public. Multimedia slideshows incorporating still images, audio (both interview and ambient sound), and video are helping to satisfy the print media industry's web-hungry customers. This format gives documentary photographers yet another powerful tool to supplement their images and heighten their emotional impact.
In an effort to stay ahead of the curve in the photojournalism industry, I have begun learning, practicing, and implementing the art of the multimedia slideshow. My first effort, Exaltation Choir, is based on a children's church choir from Richardson, Texas that visited Austin on a singing tour during one weekend in the spring of 2006. It begins with their arrival late on a Friday night and ends with their departure on Sunday afternoon. For this slideshow I used only the built-in microphone on my digital camera to collect audio. However, I am in the process of acquiring more specialized audio equipment which will allow me to provide clearer, higher quality sound to accompany my images.
